History
In 1826, when Texas was still part of Mexico and Austin had not yet become a city, Benjamin Milam obtained a land grant from Mexico to settle 300 families in the land between the Guadalupe and Colorado Rivers north of San Antonio Road. In 1835, today’s Zilker area was a part of the first two grants given to settlers Isaac Decker and Harry Hill, whose lands were divided by today’s Bluebonnet Lane and stretched from the river to what is now Ben White Blvd.
In 1918, Andrew Zilker deeded 35 acres surrounding Barton Springs to the City of Austin. The first homes built here in the 1920’s became the early Zilker neighborhood. It was also during this time that Zilker Park was first opened to the public.
