Neighborhood Spotlight: Zilker

Zilker | 78704

One of Austin’s most iconic neighborhoods, Zilker neighborhood shares its name with the city’s beloved 350-acre park that it borders. Situated at the juncture of the Colorado River and Barton Creek, Zilker Park is home to the world-renowned Barton Springs pool and Zilker Botanical Gardens, and hosts some of the city’s largest and most quintessential events – Austin City Limits music festival, Blues on the Green, Kite Fest and Trail of Lights to name a few.

It’s no wonder that the surrounding area is some of Austin’s most prime real estate – who wouldn’t want to be near all that classic Austin action?! But the charm of Zilker neighborhood goes beyond the park itself – with greenbelt trails, legendary restaurants, bars, and music venues nearby, residents and visitors of this neighborhood have a plethora of fun, unique experiences to choose from.

Located just south of Lady Bird Lake, Zilker neighborhood is bordered by the Union Pacific Railway to the southeast/south (Lamar Boulevard south of Oltorf), Barton Skyway to the south and Rabb Road and Azie Morton Road (formerly Robert E. Lee Rd) to the west.

In 1826, when Texas was still part of Mexico and Austin had not yet become a city, Benjamin Milam obtained a land grant from Mexico to settle 300 families in the land between the Guadalupe and Colorado Rivers north of San Antonio Road. In 1835, today’s Zilker area was a part of the first two grants given to settlers Isaac Decker and Harry Hill, whose lands were divided by today’s Bluebonnet Lane and stretched from the river to what is now Ben White Blvd.

In 1918, Andrew Zilker deeded 35 acres surrounding Barton Springs to the City of Austin. The first homes built here in the 1920’s became the early Zilker neighborhood. It was also during this time that Zilker Park was first opened to the public.
