History

Founded in 1876, Hutto boasts a rich agricultural heritage that has shaped its identity. Originally established as a railroad stop, Hutto’s downtown area still retains its historic charm, with vintage buildings that harken back to a simpler time. The genuine warmth of the local residents reflects the town’s history of hospitality, making visitors and newcomers feel right at home.

As you’ll notice while driving or strolling through downtown, Hutto takes its “Hippo Capital” title quite seriously, with statues, paintings and other tributes of the cuddly mascot scattered throughout the town. Local legend traces the origins of the Hutto hippo back to 1915, when a circus train carrying animals stopped to fill up with water. During this pit stop, a hippo allegedly escaped and wandered down to Cottonwood Creek. The train depot agent reportedly sent the following message to nearby communities: “Stop trains. Hippo loose in Hutto.” And thus, the legend was born.
